01●The invisible sense
The sense you probably are not designing for.
Every environment already has a scent. The question is whether it is helping the space do its job.
We notice light, sound, texture and temperature. Scent is already part of that same experience, whether it has been considered or not.
Smell is unusually closely connected with emotion, association and memory. That makes it powerful—but never universal. The same material can feel clean, comforting, energetic or overwhelming depending on its concentration, its setting and the person experiencing it.
Our work begins with context. We use science to make better decisions, then test those decisions in the real space.
02●The scent wheel
A shared language for describing scent.
The wheel groups familiar scent families by character. It is a way to begin a conversation—not a formula, a shopping list or a substitute for testing scent in context.

03●The limbic system
A connection to feeling. A connection to memory.
The limbic system is a name for interconnected brain regions involved in emotion, memory and motivation. Smell has close connections with these networks, helping explain why a fragrance can feel familiar before we find the words for it.
These systems do not operate in isolation. What a scent means depends on experience, context and the individual.
Emotion
A scent can feel welcoming, reassuring or unfamiliar. Its emotional meaning is shaped by the person and the moment.
Memory
Familiar smells can bring earlier experiences to mind, connecting a place with people, events and personal associations.
Motivation
Pleasantness, familiarity and learned associations contribute to what draws our attention and what we want to approach or avoid.
Behaviour
Scent can be one influence on a response. It works alongside the environment, expectations and other senses, not independently of them.
04●How smell reaches the brain
From the air around us to the experience within.
Smelling begins when molecules meet receptors in the nose. Those receptors send signals, rather than the molecules themselves, towards the brain.
The route connects sensory information with recognition, emotion and memory. Here is a simplified way to follow it.

Scent in the air
Airborne odour molecules enter the nose as we breathe.

Olfactory receptors
Sensory neurons high inside the nose detect the molecules and generate electrical signals.

Olfactory bulb
The signals reach the olfactory bulb, where patterns of incoming information begin to be processed.

Olfactory brain regions
Information travels to primary olfactory areas, with close connections to networks involved in emotion and memory.

Meaning and response
The brain combines scent information with context and previous experience to recognise, interpret and respond.

Different routes. One connected experience.
Smell differs from the other senses shown here: its signals can reach primary olfactory areas without first passing through the thalamus, a major sensory relay.
That does not mean scent bypasses thought, or that our other senses are purely conscious. All contribute to the wider networks through which we perceive and respond to a space.
